5 of the Best Cannabis Edibles

If you’ve ever been asked if your brownies are “special” or made with a “special ingredient,” this post is for you. Medibles, or cannabis edibles, refer to the cannabis-infused products that allow users to ingest cannabis versus inhalation methods. This is quite a revolution, especially for patients suffering from respiratory conditions and diseases such as asthma and cystic fibrosis, as well as diseases resulting from long-term tobacco use (i.e., COPD, emphysema, and lung cancer).

With so many options for ingesting, those special brownies from the 1950s have gotten remixed in some pretty unique and tasty ways. This post will not only cover what’s hot and delectable with a few of our favorite cannabis edibles, it’ll also cover key things for you to know before you take that first bite.

Know Your Dose

No two patients are alike and everyone will react differently to cannabis edibles. A single dose of any cannabis edible is said to be 10 mg of THC, but even that could be too potent for a newer cannabis user. If you’ve never consumed edibles before, we suggest starting with 1–2 mg and going from there. For the occasional consumer, we recommend 5–10 mg. Also, it’s important to note that, just because you’re a regular cannabis smoker, doesn’t mean your tolerance is higher with edibles. Edibles are absorbed through the stomach, rather than the lungs. Comparing tolerances is like comparing lemons to YILO Lemonade. Look for products that have the dosages clearly labeled so your experience is the swellest it can be.

Eat Something First

Like you would if you were taking a painkiller, you should eat a substantial non-cannabis meal before consuming a potent edible. You might be wondering, “Wait, so I’m supposed to eat in preparation for eating?” Simply put, yes. Otherwise, you could get too high and that’s never fun. While this advice may seem contradictory, studies have shown that eating before ingesting cannabinoids actually improves the bioavailability. It’s akin to preheating an oven; the body’s digestive system gets a head start. If you’re suffering from nausea, even a small amount of food can help carry the cannabis through your system versus an empty stomach.

Be Patient

While the effects of smoking happen faster, edibles are different in that the effect is NOT immediate. Rather, edibles can take up to two hours to onset. It’s an all-too-real tale: you eat a gummy, wait 30 minutes, don’t feel anything, eat another gummy… and an hour later you’re pretty sure you can hear your hair growing and doing your best to make sure the aliens in your living room think you’re a good host. We suggest waiting a minimum of an hour and a half to take another dose if you’re not feeling the effects of the first. Even the strongest cannabis edibles effects can take time to kick in.

Now that we’ve got the technical stuff out of the way, let’s explore our favorite products and some of the most potent cannabis edibles. All of the products listed below can be purchased at any of our four Swell Farmacy locations.

Drinks

Keef Cola

Keef Cola was one of the first cannabis-infused beverages offered in Colorado and has stayed a popular choice among patients for good reason. Keef Cola comes in a variety of flavors including Blue Dream, Cherry Bomb, Bubba Kush Root Beer, Lemonade Grenade, Orange Kush, and Flo Energy (cannabis-infused energy drink). The beverages are categorized by CBD, Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid options and vary by dosage, but most are 100 mg, so if you decide to try Keef Cola, take it slow by starting with small sips.

Baked Bros Pourable THC Syrup

Baked Bros Pourable THC Syrup is a highly concentrated syrup that many patients pour into other drinks such as tea or even sports drinks. Because it’s a concentrate, the effects are relatively quick, usually within 30 minutes and lasting a maximum of six hours, depending on the dose consumed. Flavors are available in Grape, Cherry, Strawberry Kiwi, Watermelon, and Mango, in 300 mg/2oz and 600 mg/4oz bottles.

A word of caution with cannabis beverages: they may seem like a great drink to mix with alcohol, but it would be best to avoid mixing. Alcohol can heighten the effects of cannabis, which could lead to unpleasant side effects and impaired judgement.

Sticky Lickies come in a variety of flavors, including Watermelon, Pineapple, Mango, Blueberry, and Blackberry.

Kiva Bar

The Kiva Bar is a chocolate bar that comes in six different flavors and 60 mg and 180 mg dosages. Not only did this Kiva Confections chocolate bar win Best Edible at both the San Francisco and Los Angeles High Times Cannabis Cups in 2013, it has also appeared in a Forbes article about cannabis product branding.

Hi All, I just want to ask if anyone ever tried using medical cannabis as an alternative meds? I have read many articles about medical marijuana and how it can help you in terms of chronic pain, bone injuries, eating disorder/anorexia, anxiety disorders and panic attacks, inflammation, even cancer and a lot more. Like this article about a marijuana strain from:http://www.ilovegrowingmarijuana.com/manitoba-poison/ . Cbd and thc are also new to me and I don’t even smoke. If this is true I cant find any solid conclusive evidence that speaks to its efficacy. Any personal experience or testimonial would be highly appreciated. Thanks
